vertical bar (plural vertical bars)
- computing The ASCII character at the decimal position of 124, depicted as | or ¦; used in mathematics to show an absolute value (e.g. <math>|x|</math>), norms (e.g. <math>||(x_1,x_2)||</math>), set definitions (e.g. <math>\{x|x<2\}</math>), conditional probability (e.g. <math>P(X|Y)</math>), and divisibility (e.g. <math>a | b</math>); in Unix, it is used as a pipe; in regular expressions, it indicates an alternation.
